General Background 

Nevada Legal Services' mission is to strengthen the community of Nevada by ensuring fairness and providing equal access to justice for low-income Nevadans. Nevada Legal Services (NLS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, formed in 1982, that serves all 17 counties and 23 Indian Reservations in Nevada. Nevada Legal Services has offices in Reno, Las Vegas, Carson City, Elko, and Yerington, and is the only legal organization that provides free civil legal services to the entire State of Nevada. NLS has a staff of approximately 60 with an annual budget of some $7M. 

NLS primarily serves clients with incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level with limited assets. It is funded by grants from the Legal Services Corporation, the Nevada Bar Foundation, and other state, federal, and private grants.

Position Summary 

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall executive leadership and operational administration of NLS. The Executive Director ensures that the agency fulfills its mission to provide access to justice for low-income Nevadans. The Executive Director establishes external partnerships at the local community and state levels, assists with the identification of community needs, and is engaged in program planning and policy formation. The Executive Director answers to the Board of Directors. 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • Passion to provide legal services to underserved Nevadans. Ability to relate to and communicate with clients. 
  • Strong preference for an attorney. Preference for a member of the Nevada Bar or someone with the commitment to sit for the Nevada Bar exam within three years of employment.
  • Experience with legal aid services.
  • Strategic thinking and vision. The vision and strategic thinking to see opportunities for growth and improve NLS efficiency, quality, and diversification of revenue sources.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience with significant administrative responsibilities, preferably nonprofit leadership experience.
  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to build strong collaborative teams and actively engage with staff.
  • Excellent coalition-building skills and previous success in establishing partnerships with individuals and organizations of influence, including the legal community, partner legal aid agencies, civic leaders, government officials, nonprofit agencies, donors and volunteers.
  • Fundraising experience, an understanding of nonprofit grant-seeking and fundraising strategies.
  • Strong financial management skills.
  • Change agent - effective leadership with the ability to “bring others along.”
  • Ability to successfully manage conflict and adversity.
  • Experience working with the Legal Services Corporation (LSC).
  • Must be able and willing to travel with some overnights to cover the service area. Perhaps a 20% to 25% travel requirement.

Compensation and Benefits 

The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $180,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include a full range of health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), malpractice insurance and bar dues, retirement savings, life insurance, vacation and sick leave, and other benefits.
