Specific priorities for an Interim Executive Director include the following:
- Identify Board, staff, or program areas to address in advance of the hiring of the permanent Executive Director. Work with the Board to address these issues.
- Sustain external relations, especially relationships with funders and other key stakeholders.
- Foster staff morale through the transition and build staff readiness to partner with a new ED. Ensure that staff are working well together through the transition to new leadership.
- Closely oversee the budget, especially revenue generation and expenditures.
- Monitor programs to make certain they are functioning well during the transition.
Preferred Qualifications for Interim Executive / Leadership Positions:
- Seasoned nonprofit leader with successful senior-level experience managing an organization (programs, strategy, human resources, finances, and systems/infrastructure).
- Strategic thinker who is good at making decisions with an understanding of how they impact the big picture.
- Team builder who is good with coaching staff to performance. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience working with boards of directors.
- Ability to maintain relationships with external stakeholders and funders.
- Strong strategic fiscal management, oversight and budgeting skills.
- Good understanding of the operational and back-office systems and infrastructure of a nonprofit (HR, Finance, IT, etc.).
